Partisans and Parliamentarians Adopt a New Bill Drafted by the Egyptian Organization for Political Parties

The Egyptian Organization for Human Rights held a workshop at its office entitled “Partisan Life in Egypt...Reality and Future Prospects” on 23/4/2008. A number of representatives of political parties and members of parliament declared their intention to adopt a new bill concerning political parties, and replace the current law - Law No.40 of 1977. Participants agreed to submit the bill to the Egyptian Parliament.

This workshop will include a group of university professors and members of People’s assembly and Shura Council and representatives of parties and political forces and civil society activists.

The Egyptian organization for human rights expresses its deepest worries concerning the decision that issued by the Supreme Military Court on 15/4/2008 in case No. 2 2007 against Mohamed El Shater and others who were sentenced to 3-10 years imprisonment .EOHR calls the President to stop the decision issued against Mohamed El Shater and retrial defendants before the normal judge .

Our defense of this constitutional right will come through the “Freedom for Detainees of 6th April” Campaign. This campaign includes a group of lawyers and human rights activists along with a number of representatives from civil society organizations in Egypt.

The Egyptian Organization for Human Rights issued a report entitled "Egypt…Economic Suffocation Propels Events at El Mahala" on Thursday 10/4/2008. This report documents the results of a fact finding mission which was sent El Mahala city. Along with the results of the fact finding mission, the report includes background information on the state of Egypt on 6 April and other extensive analyses of the causes and motives of the escalation of events in El Mahala.

The International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) and the Egyptian Organization for Human Rights (EOHR) express their distress regarding the arrest of prominent opposition speaker and former leader of the well known Kifaya movement, George Ishak, after the movement backed a nationwide strike earlier this week and has been denied the right to meet with lawyers.

According to information received on April 10th 2008, police forces entered Ishak's home on the night of April 9th and arrested him also searching his home, confiscating personal documents and books and denying him the right of legal representation.
