    EOHR holds a workshop on
    "Egyptian Legislations and the Prevention of the crime of Torture"

    Within the framework of its campaign against torture, the Egyptian Organization for Human Rights (EOHR) holds a workshop on "Egyptian Legislations: Prevention of the Crime of Torture Punishment of the perpetrators". The workshop is to be held on Wednesday, August 27, 2003 at Omar El Khayaam Hall, Shepard Hotel.

         In the light of the background paper prepared by EOHR and the discussions of a number of specialists, experts and law men - EOHR aims at concluding a comprehensive document on the legislative shortage as regards the prevention of torture and the punishment of its perpetrators.
    Moreover, it will make some proposals regarding the amendment of the prevailing legislations in the light of the Egyptian Constitution and the international instruments on human rights.
    EOHR is planning to publish the output on the largest scales to the appropriate authorities, members of the People's Assembly and the Shura Council, the experts and the civil society organizations.
           The topics on which the roundtable will focus are:
      1- Combating torture in the light of the international instruments.
      2- The shortage of the domestic legislations as regards the prevention of the crime of torture and punishing its perpetrators.
      3- The impunity provided for the crime of torture in Egypt under the Emergency Law.
      4- The rulings of the Egyptian judiciary on cases of torture.
