      EORH organizes a roundtable discussion entitled "Is granting the power of judicial seizure to al-Azhar considered to be a violation of freedom of thought?" which will be taking place on Saturday the 19th of June 2004, at 6:00 PM, Helnan Shepherd Hotel, Cairo.

      Egyptian thinkers, intellectuals, and writers will be participants in this roundtable discussion.
      The roundtable will be discussing the recent decision of the Minister of Justice to grant al-Azhar inspectors the privileges of law officers and the power of censorship, and the consequences of this decision on the freedom of thought, belief, and _expression.
      These freedoms are furnished by the Egyptian Constitution and international human rights documents.
      The roundtable will be also discussing the role of the religious institutions as a censoring body, and the legal frame of freedom of _expression in Egypt, and to what extent this decision is compatible with calls for reform carried out by Egypt recently.
