The Egyptian Organization for Human Rights unreservedly condemns the abduction of the two French journalists taken hostage in Iraq and adds its voice to the international community's calls for their release. It extends its support to the joint FIDH - LDH press statement which follows.

IRAQ: FRENCH HOSTAGES MUST BE RELEASED IMMEDIATELY

    Paris 29 August 2004
The chain of abductions in Iraq, whether or not followed by executions, is a result of the bloody chaos which reigns in the country. Nothing can justify such acts which are a flagrant violation of the most fundamental of human rights. The Federation Internationale des ligues des droits de l'Homme (FIDH) and la Ligue francaise des driots de l'Homme et du citoyen (LDH) condemn these acts unreservedly, regardless of the authors of these crimes or their motivations.

The abduction of these two French journalists and the death threats made against them are repugnant, and the official motive for these acts entirely unacceptable.

FIDH and LDH call for the immediate and unconditional release of Georges Malbrunot and Christian Chesnot and all other abducted individuals in Iraq.

Opposition to the policy regarding the bearing of religious symbols in schools can never be a pretext for abduction.

FIDH and LDH warns all those tempted to use these events as a justification, in one way or another, for their stand in this debate. They will unwittingly play the game of the kidnappers and will bear responsibility for subsequent dangerous and repugnant similar acts.
