EOHR condemns kidnapping of French journalists

    1/9/2004

The Egyptian Organization for Human Rights (EOHR) is seriously concerned about the kidnapping of two French journalists; Christian Chesnot a French television correspondent, and Georges Malbrunot a journalist with Le Figaro.

In a recording broadcast on the Jazeera news channel a group calling itself the Islamic Army in Iraq threatened to execute the two hostages if the French Government does not repeal a law banning the Islamic veil in French schools.

A total number of 51 journalists from 16 countries have been killed in Iraq, the last of whom was an Italian journalist executed because of the Italian Government's refusal to submit to the demand of the Islamic Army in Iraq and withdraw its troops from the multinational coalition forces in Iraq.

EOHR believes that the indiscriminate kidnapping of journalists and civilians working in Iraq will not bring about the liberation of Iraq but rather will impede the Iraqi people's struggle for self-determination and freedom from the occupation.

EOHR urges the kidnappers to immediately release the French journalists as well as two Egyptian hostages; Mohamed Ali Sanad, who has been held hostage for a month and Nasser Gumaa, kidnapped four days ago from north Bijy. It calls on the kidnappers to put an end to these inhumane acts which do immense damage to the reputation of Iraq and the Iraqi people.
