Human rights and education in Egypt
13/9/2004
Human rights education is an integral part of education. Article 26 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, article 13 of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights and article 29 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child all state that educational policy must be directed towards the development of the personality and the strengthening of respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms. Teaching human rights in schools, educational institutes and universities is one of the basic elements of educational system reform in Egypt.
The Egyptian Organization for Human Rights (EOHR) is holding a discussion under the title "the culture of human rights and educational reform in Egypt" on Sunday the 19th September 2004. The discussion, which will be attended by human rights activists, education specialists and researchers, will be held in the Helnan Shepherd Hotel, Cairo, and start at 6.00 p.m.
Participants will examine the educational system in Egypt and the position of human rights teaching within it. They will consider methods of revising curricula and teaching materials from a human rights perspective and the role that civil society institutions can play in this and will examine the obstacles to teaching human rights in Egyptian schools and ways of overcoming them.
