EOHR demands immediate inquiry into hunger strike in Abu Za'bal Penitentiary
22/11/2004
The Egyptian Organization for Human Rights (EOHR) calls for an immediate investigation into the hunger strike launched by prisoners held in Abu Za'bal Penitentiary. The strike, which began at the beginning of November, is in protest at living conditions, inhumane treatment, restricted visits from relatives, the poor standard of food and contaminated drinking water which leads to tuberculosis and liver and kidney diseases.
According to a complaint sent to EOHR by the family of Magdy Muhamed Muhamed Salem (a member of the Fatah Vanguard Organisation) Ramadan visits were cancelled as a result of Salem starting the hunger strike.
EOHR is extremely concerned about prisoners' health conditions. It calls on the Minister of Interior to conduct an investigation the conditions inside Abu Za'bal Prison in order to eliminate the sources of prisoners' complaints and protect their lives. It demands that the Prosecutor General carry out inspections inside prisons pursuant to the powers conferred on him by article 42 of the Criminal Procedures Code. Members of the Prosecution Office must visit Abu Za'bal Penitentiary themselves in order to investigate the reasons behind the strike and eliminate them.
