EOHR calls for immediate inquiry into death in police station

The Egyptian Organization for Human Rights (EOHR) is extremely concerned about information it has received about the death of Abdel Tawwab Youssef Eddin during his detention in a Cairo police station. On Sunday the 19th 2004 he was arrested by state security investigation forces from the Nasr City 1st police station and detained in the station. He was charged with theft.
On the 23rd September Youssef Eddin's family received a telephone call informing them that he had died and that his body was in the al Ta'min al Sahy Hospital in Nasr City. When shown his body Youssef Eddin's wife found bruising to his face, groin area and circular wounds to his feet.
The Hospital administration informed the prosecution office of the death and the injuries which had led them to believe that foul play was involved. The Prosecution Office ordered that an autopsy be carried out. The initial Health Office autopsy report ordered by the prosecution office revealed that surface clotting had occurred shortly before death in the groin area and to the penis and bottom of the feet.
The fact that this death occurred in a police station combined with the injuries described in the autopsy report strongly suggests that Youssef Eddin's death was caused by torture. EOHR demands that the Prosecutor General launch an immediate into this death and ensure that those found responsible for it face justice. It renews its consistent calls for a review of the legislation on torture and underlines the necessity of state bodies taking the measures necessary to stop torture.
