Electoral reform issues…visions and tools

The Egyptian Organization for Human Rights (EOHR) is convening a seminar under the title Electoral reform issues…visions and tools on Saturday the 7th May 2005 in the Pyramisa Hotel, Doqqi, Cairo.
Academics, experts, jurists, rights activists, political party representatives and People's Assembly members will participate in the seminar proceedings, including: Alaa Eddin Helal, former Minister of Youth, Abdel Ahad Gamal Eddin, head of the People's Assembly Human Rights Committee, Ibrahim Darwish and Yehya al Gamal, professors of constitutional law, Mahmoud Abaza, deputy head of the Wafd political party, Diaa Eddin Dawad, head of the Nasserite party and Mohamed al Sayyed Said, deputy director of the Al Ahram Center for Political and Strategic Studies.
The seminar will discuss various electoral reform issues from the perspective of effective political equilibrium in order to crystallize a shared vision of an electoral system best suited to Egyptian conditions which will boost democratic development, strengthen political party activism and give effect to the role of parliament in such a way that it reflects voters' free will.
The seminar will also deal with fundamental elements of the electoral process such as updating electoral lists, countering undemocratic processes such as the use of violence and intimidation, bribery, administrative interference and other practices which have a negative impact the electoral process. It will also consider ways of realising effective supervision of the elections.
