EOHR calls for immediate inquiry into assault of eight journalists

The Egyptian Organization for Human Rights (EOHR) today (28/5/2005) sent a complaint to the attorney general Maher Abdel Wahed about the assault of eight journalists while they were covering the Kifaya demonstrations against the article 76 amendment referendum held on Wednesday 25th May 2005 in front of the journalists' and lawyers' syndicates headquarters.
EOHR heard the account of a female journalist with the Dustour newspaper who was assaulted by members of security forces and thugs in front of policemen.
EOHR has obtained the names of eight journalists who were assaulted by members of security forces;
1. Abdel Halim Qandil, editor of Al Araby newspaper
2. Mohamed Abdel Qadouss, reporter with the Journalists' Syndicate Freedoms Committee
3. Shaymaa Abu el Kheir, journalist with the Dustour newspaper
4. Abeer al Askary, journalist with Dustour newspaper
5. Hany al Asr, journalist with Dustour newspaper
6. Wael Tawfiq, journalist with Dustour newspaper
7. Nawal Ali, journalist with al Geel newspaper
8. Iman Taha Kamel, freelancer
EOHR has demanded that the attorney general:
1. Launch immediate investigations into these assaults
2. Hear, as soon as possible, the testimonies of the journalists whose names are mentioned in the complaint
3. Make public the results of his inquiries
4. Send those found responsible for committing these assaults to criminal trial
