EOHR calls for release of detainees

    23/6/2005

The Egyptian Organization for Human Rights (EOHR) is extremely concerned about the continued detention of political detainees under administrative orders issued by the Interior Minister pursuant to the Emergency Law. These detainees have remained in detention despite having received up to ten judicial release orders. EOHR has received the names of these detainees from their mothers and wives, who demonstrated on 11th June 2005 in front of the Lawyers' Syndicate protesting their continued detention.

During the demonstration the women told EOHR that they were protesting with the aim of securing the release of their loved ones, and would continue protesting indefinitely until they received a response to their demand.

The majority of detainees endure extremely bad health conditions, including inadequate medical treatment, the spread of disease and infections and the infection of some with allergies and spinal cord inflammations.

EOHR reiterates its calls for an end to the state of emergency and the release of detainees being held through administrative orders but is conscious of the fact that even the provisions of the Emergency Law are not respected by the Interior Ministry.

Political detention not only deprives individuals who have not committed any crime justifying their punishment of their liberty but makes their families suffer, especially those families without any source of fixed income, because the detained son or father may be the family's sole breadwinner.

EOHR calls for the immediate release of these detainees and emphasises the necessity of putting an end to the state of emergency, a legal tool used to sweep away rights to freedom, personal security and other fundamental rights guaranteed by the Constitution and international human rights instruments.
