The Civil Society Election Observatory meets with National Council for Human Rights leaders
11/7/2005
The National Council for Human Rights (NCHR) supports the Civil Society Election Observatory’s request – submitted to official bodies – that the Observatory be helped to carry out its tasks in the forthcoming period easily. This comes after a meeting between members of the Observatory and the NCHR delegation, headed by NCHR vice-president Ahmed Kamal Aboul Magd and included NCHR secretary general Ambassador Mokhles Qotb and several members of the Council.
Hafez Abu Seada, secretary general of the Egyptian Organization for Human Rights (EOHR), a member of the NCHR and the Observatory coordinator, said the representatives of the Observatory reaffirmed, during the meeting, the independence of the Observatory and asked the NCHR to do the necessary to allow the Observatory to successfully monitor the elections.
Abu Seada added that NCHR’s vice-president welcomed the Observatory’s request and that the two parties agreed to establish a joint committee to ensure cooperation between the Observatory and NCHR with regard to electoral monitoring as well as aiding the Observatory in the preparation and training of personnel taking part in the monitoring process. He further added that these issues will be discussed in the upcoming Observatory meeting expressing hope that others will cooperate with the Observatory to ensure free and fair elections in Egypt.
The Observatory brings together 22 human rights organisations with a special interest in democracy and human rights and was formed in February 2005 to monitor the upcoming presidential and legislative elections.
