EOHR calls for the revision of electoral registers and the removal of some fifteen thousand citizens with dual nationality and those whose nationalities have been withdrawn
4/8/2005

The Egyptian Organization for Human Rights (EOHR) calls on Presidential Elections Committee and Supreme Committee for Elections to oblige the Interior Ministry to present a report determining the names of citizens with dual nationalities and those whole nationalities have been withdrawn so as to be removed them from electoral registers before upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections .

EOHR's demands come after the realisation of some 26 citizens whose nationalities were withdrawn between 1998 and 2005 under article 16 of the Nationality Law while the number of foreign-national Egyptians that have not acquired Egyptian nationalities reached 7196 between 1986 and 2004. Egyptians authorised to enjoy dual nationalities between 1986 and 2004. In total 15,319 Egyptians fall under the three provisions according to the decrees and documents of the Interior Minister and the Council of Ministers which have been published in official newspapers.

EOHR believes these statistics are only a fraction of real numbers, and thus calls for the revision of Egyptian nationality law in conformity to international human rights instruments and their provisions with regards to holders of dual nationalities and those whose nationalities have been withdrawn. The existence of such cases in electoral registers is a violation to laws organizing elections, and the principles and rulings of Supreme Administrative Court upon which upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections.

EOHR also calls on the Interior Ministry to present a report listing the names of Egyptians with dual nationalities and those whose nationalities have been withdrawn so as to be removed from electoral registers prior to upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections. This must be done by the Presidential Elections' Committee stipulated by law 174 [2005] and Supreme Committee for Elections according to terms of law 173 [2005].
