15/8/2005
Members of the Civil Society Monitoring Observatory and the observatory's consultative group held their third meeting at the headquarters of the Egyptian Organization for Human Rights (EOHR) in the presence of twenty representatives from the consultative group and the organisations brought together by the observatory. Dr. Mohammed Sayyed Said, secretary-general of the consultative group and the vice president of Al Ahram Centre for Political and Strategic Studies, presided over the meeting.
The meeting discussed the executive plan for the monitoring of up-coming presidential elections and the division of tasks amongst the various organisations of the observatory. This included, for example, media monitoring within the framework of the laws and legislation organising the work of the media, field monitoring in the various governorates, conducting studies on the legislative and legal environment under which the elections will take place. EOHR assumed responsibility to train monitors and trainers in nineteen governorates at a minimum of 100 monitors for each governorate. Other observatory member organisations have assumed responsibility for the monitoring process and have said they would meet to put a detailed plan of the monitoring process following the training phase.

The members also discussed the importance of coordination in relation to setting unified standards for the monitoring process, work ethics and the enhancement of civil society performance with other non-governmental observers.
Amongst the participants were Fatima Khafagee, member of the National Council for Human Rights and Gamal Zahran, professor of political science along with observatory representatives including EOHR Secretary General Hafez Abu Seada, the Observatory, Magdy Abdel Hamid, director of the Civil Society Participation Association, Bahey Eddin Hassan, director of the Cairo Institute for Human Rights, Hazem Mounir, president of the Egyptian Association for Training and Human Rights, Fareed Zahran, director of Al Mahroussa Centre and Gamal Abdul Aziz, director of the Arab Network for Human Rights Information.
