EOHR calls for investigation into Esna Construction workers' hunger strike
|
14/9/2005
The Egyptian Organization for Human Rights (EOHR) is anxious towards a hunger strike made by 22 workers and employees in the administration for protecting the Nile in Luxor (Esna Nile Construction) because they take low wages.
On Wednesday 31st August 2005, the chair of Nile Protection administration (Luxor) decided to minimize workers' wages, in which, the salary range is from three to five pounds, instead of eight to ten pounds, in addition, they also employed another workers in the same month, note; (minimizing workers' wages was on purpose, not for lowering expenses), accordingly, the workers didn't have August wages until now, and they went on a hunger strike in Esna Public Hospital, since Tuesday (13/9/2005), until they have their wages and the abolition of minimising wages decree.
Moreover, EOHR criticizes the authorities' neglect to strikers' demand, which will lead to a long- term strike.
Accordingly, EOHR calls the Prosecutor-General to order the members of Public Prosecution to investigate with strikers, and listen to their complaints. It also calls the government to take forward steps to prevent these incidents, provide medial care for the safety of strikers, and make necessary efforts to give the strikers their stable preceding wages before lowering expenses.
