A police officer shot two citizens
EOHR calls for legislative amendments
18/10/2005

The Egyptian Organization for Human Rights (EOHR) sent fact-finding mission's delegation to find out the transgression incident of two citizens - shot via a police office from Helwan police station-, they are located in El- Manial El Gameay hospital's intensive care; accordingly, EOHR is anxious and demands legislative amendment.

On Friday 7th October 2005, a bus driver, Alaa Mahmoud Abd el lateef and his friend Mohamed Adly were transgressed via a police officer (Atlas police station), the latter descended all the passengers and demanded a lift to Atlas area, the driver's refusal led to a controversy between the two; accordingly, the officer shot Alaa Mahmoud Abdel Lateef, and his friend Mohamed Adly, both of them were injured in the neck, (the first victim entered a coma, while the other's spinal code was cut off, which paralyzed him). The two citizens were transferred to Helwan public hospital, which refused to receive the two cases, on this pretext; they were transferred to El-Manial El- Gameay hospital in which they were located in emergency section. The Prosecution held investigation and decided to imprison the officer four days under pledge, in the trial no 10166 [2005], (Helwan administrative).

EOHR calls the Prosecutor to delegate a medical examiner to check on both Alaa Mahmoud and Mohamed Adly. Moreover, it calls Interior Minister to hold related investigations.

Accordingly, EOHR reconfirms its demand to amend criminal legislation determining (torture crime) - which is considered a tool to protect the doers- though the government (headed by Interior Minister), must curb these deeds and take serious steps to stop this farce.
