EOHR demands immediate investigation in the transgression act against Asmaa Heriz

The Egyptian Organization for Human Rights (EOHR) condemns transgression against 'Asmaa Mohamed Ahmed Ali Heriz' the trainee journalist in Al-Karama (Dignity) news paper, in the course of second phase run offs elections coverage.

Accordingly, EOHR calls for immediate investigation in this incident in which it violates the right to freedom, personal security and physical safety guaranteed by both Constitution and international human rights instruments, also Article 280 of Penal Code states that no one is arrested or detained unless under a judicial decree. In addition to Article 40 of Criminal Procedures Law states that 'it is illegal to arrest or detain any person without a legal decree and he must be treated without any physical or psychological abuse'.

The incident was held late Saturday 26th November 20005, a group of trouble makers took hold of the journalist (Asmaa Mohamed Ahmed Ali Heriz) and they beat her violently before Counting poll station related to Shubra second section Constituency, she was kidnapped in a black car and blindfold her eyes, then they sent her to state security investigation declaring their belonging, the kidnappers took her mobile phone, camera and a gold chain, later an officer calls for women trouble makers to abuse her physically and tatter her clothes until she was injured badly and thrown out under 6th October bridge in Abdel Meneam Riad Square.

This incident is a series of the same scenario of the transgressions against the journalists and media field workers, in which two journalists from Al-Dostour news paper (Abeer El Askary and Shaimaa Abu El Kheir), were abused physically during which they were covering KIFAYA (Youth for Change) demonstrations held in Wednesday (25/5/2005), for boycotting the referendum of amending Article 76 of the Constitution and adding Article 192 (repeated).

In addition to the assault against Ahmed Mansour, the journalist in Jazeera Channel (November 2005), Abdel Halim Qandeel, the executive editor-in-chef of Al-Arabi newspaper was kidnapped and physically abused via some trouble makers (November 2004), the journalist and editor-in-chef of Al-Wafd news paper was beaten via ten anonymous trouble makers (August 1995) and finally the assault against Mohamed Abdel Qodos (journalist) in (21 June 1995). They all declared their refusal to Law 93 [1995].

Year 1988 witnessed transgressions against the opposed journalists, Mostafa Shordy, Wafd journalist Ayman Nour, and Abdel Azzim Monaf, former editor-in-chef of Soot Al-Arab (Arabs voice) news paper.

Finally, EOHR denounces again the transgression incident against the journalist (Asmaa Heriz), though it demands immediate investigation from the Interior Ministry, for taking hold of the criminal doers and bring them to trial and declare the investigation results to the public, also they must take the necessary procedures to protect the victim from these transgressions, and finally she must be revealed to legal medicine to investigate about her status and injuries.
