EHOR condemns the security forces aggression against strikers at Judges Club and seeks starting investigations
26/4/2006

The Egyptian Organization for Human Rights (EOHR) expresses its utmost concern and condemnation against the aggression of security forces against a group of political activists, and also Judge Mahmoud Hamza the President of North Cairo Court in front of the Judges Club, seeking rapid opening of investigations in the events.

Aggressions took place on the early morning of Monday April 24th 2006, when a force of Cairo Security Forces accompanied by State Security Force, as established by witnesses, broke into a strike by some political activists in solidarity with the judges in front of the Judges Club in Abdulkhaliq Tharwat Street in Cairo. The force aggressed the strikers by beating, and among them was Judge Mahmoud Abdullatif Hamza, North Cairo Court President.

He was subjected to beating by hands and feet, stripped out of his clothes, and his licensed pistol was taken from him, then the security forces assaulted twelve more citizens whom were by chance in front of the Judges Club and inside streets leading to it. They were beaten once again in the police transfer car, then transferred to General Prosecution Office where they were accused of raising publicity against the public security, demonstrating in contradiction to law 10/1914. The General Prosecution also accused them of obstructing the roads, and assaulting civil servants on their prescribed jobs, on basis of the decision issued from Kasr Al Nile District 4/2006 about removing the tent in which the strikers intended to stay over night.

Noteworthy, EOHR lawyers attended the investigations at the Public Prosecution Office with the suspects, and asked to see the removal decision, but the Public Prosecution refused.

The investigations documents were registered by no. 5476/2006 Kasr Al Nile district, and the Public Prosecution announced their retention for 15 days for the purposes of investigations.

EOHR confirms that such events are a grave breach to all international instruments concerned with human rights which keeps the rights of citizens to peaceful assembly and strikes. Also it represents a grave breach to the independence of the judiciary and the judges' immunity.

Therefore, EOHR is asking the Minister of Interior to start investigating rapidly and publicly with the leaders of the security forces that participated in the events that took place, also asking the Prosecutor General to investigate rapidly in the events and to turn whomever turns out involved in the events to the criminal court.

Also asking stopping the retention of all suspects in case no. 5476/2006 and having a hearing for them as victims because of the beating they faced during their arrest.
