30/5/2006
Azbakeya Misdemeanor Court decided on its session held on May 28th 2006 to penalize the two officers Amr Saudi and Yasser Al Tawel, the officers at the investigations office of Azbakeya Police Department, regarding case no. 2942/2005 Azbakeya, decided the following:
(3 months in prison, and a hundred pound charged against each of the two officers, and 2001 L.E. paid with the help of the Minister of Interior, on the occasion of treating citizen Hossam Al Saeed Mohamed Amer inhuman treatment).
Events leading to the convection goes to October 8th 2003 during the citizen's presence inside the police department, after a fight between him and a city private bus driver, as the driver accused him of possessing an unauthentic 50 L.E. bill, and decided to take him to the department, where he was transferred to the Prosecution Office, and where they decided to release him. However, during the time he spent in the police department he was subjected to beating from the two officers Amr Saudi and Yasser Al Tawel.
The Prosecution Office took over investigations and decided to refer the two officers to trial, for committing a felony mention in Article 129, Criminal Code.
EOHR is once again asserting that the revision of the Egyptian legislative structure regarding the torture crimes is still in need for revision, as many of crimes of the kind are regarded in Egyptian courts as Misdemeanors and not criminal acts, which is the natural outcome of Article 126 that defines torture crime, leading to weak verdicts falling short of facing the crimes committed.
