EOHR Calls for Solidarity with the Tunisian League for Human Rights
|
26/2/2007
EOHR condemns the prevention of the 6th Annual Conference of the Tunisian League for Human Rights (LTDH) by the Tunisian authorities. The prevention of the conference came according to a judicial decree issued on the 18th February 2007. EOHR demands the Tunisian Government to put an end to all restrictions suffered by the Tunisian civil society in general, and LTDH in specific.
Its worth mentioning that during the 5th Annual Conference of the LTDH, members of the ruling Constitutional Party, who are also members of LTDH, issues many legal petitions to dominate the leading bodies of LTDH, but they didn't succeed.
The Annual Conference aims to perform elections for the new leadership of the League and also to put a working plan to monitor human rights violations in Tunisia and the way to combat them.
EOHR reaffirms that these suppressive actions taken against LTDH constitute a violation to freedom of expression and the right to peaceful assembly which are both furnished by international human rights law.
Accordingly, EOHR calls upon all Arab and international organizations concerned with human rights to declare their condemnation to these violations committed by the Tunisian authorities against the civil society and human rights activists.
