EOHR and DRI Release their Joint Report
"Assessment of the Electoral Framework in Egypt"

The Egyptian Organization for Human Rights (EOHR) and Democracy Reporting International (DRI) will hold a press conference to announce the release of their joint report "Assessment of the Electoral Framework in Egypt". The press conference will take place at EOHR premises at 12:00 noon, on the 30th April 2007, with the participation of Michael Meyer from DRI and Hafez Abu Seada the secretary general of EOHR.
According to Abu Seada, this report is the offspring of a mutual efforts done by EOHR and DRI aiming to benefit from the European experience in the field of political and electoral reform which will ultimately lead to a fruitful cooperation in the field of political, constitutional and electoral reform, while stressing on the special characteristics and needs of every party.
The report includes a general background on the legal framework organizing the electoral process in Egypt and constitutional provisions on the right to political participation and Egypt's international obligations concerning this right, the role of both the executive and the legislative authorities in the electoral process, the role of the judiciary and municipal administrations. The report also included an evaluation of 2005's parliamentary elections for all phases including administration, judicial supervision and fairness guarantees.
The report also included chapter on constitutional reform and the referendum on the constitutional reform that took place on the 26th March 2007 and other complimentary laws.
The report concludes to a group of recommendations concerning electoral reform in Egypt. These recommendations will be presented to the President of the republic, the Parliament and Shura Council, civil society organizations, intellectuals and prominent figures.
